Bihar Voter ID Revision Continues: Supreme Court Rejects Stay, Aadhaar & Other IDs Considered

The Supreme Court has declined to put a stop to the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar, dismissing concerns about potential voter suppression. The court acknowledged the anxieties surrounding the process, but emphasized the importance of allowing the Election Commission to carry out its duties. The judges suggested considering a range of identification documents, including Aadhaar cards, existing voter IDs, and ration cards, to ensure a smooth and inclusive Special Summary Revision (SSR).

Election Commission Reassures on Transparency and Due Process

The Election Commission (EC) reassured the court that the voter revision process is being conducted with utmost transparency and adherence to established procedures. The EC emphasized its commitment to preventing any form of disenfranchisement and highlighted the multiple avenues available for citizens to register or update their voter information. They stressed the importance of the SSR for maintaining an accurate and updated electoral roll.

Addressing Concerns about Potential Disenfranchisement

Responding directly to allegations of potential disenfranchisement, the EC detailed the steps taken to safeguard the rights of all eligible voters. The use of multiple identification documents, as suggested by the Supreme Court, aims to minimize any potential barriers to participation in the democratic process. The EC reiterated its commitment to a fair and inclusive electoral process and urged citizens to cooperate with the ongoing revision exercise.
