Pilots’ Union Defends Pilots After Air India 171 Crash Report Hints at Suicide

The Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) has voiced strong opposition to the Air Accident Investigation Bureau’s (AAIB) preliminary report on the tragic Air India 171 crash. The union firmly rejects any insinuation of pilot suicide, emphasizing the extensive screening and rigorous training all pilots undergo.

ICPA Condemns ‘Irresponsible’ Speculation

The ICPA released a statement denouncing the speculative nature of the report, calling it both irresponsible and insensitive. They highlighted the immense pressure such speculation places on the grieving families of the crew and the broader pilot community. The union believes the focus should remain on a thorough and unbiased investigation to determine the true cause of the accident.

Pilots Undergo Rigorous Training and Evaluation, Union Stresses

The ICPA reiterated the stringent selection process and continuous training pilots must successfully complete. They emphasized the dedication and professionalism of their members, arguing that suggesting suicide undermines the commitment pilots demonstrate to passenger safety. The union called for a respectful and evidence-based investigation, urging against premature conclusions that could unfairly tarnish the reputations of dedicated professionals.
